My Fortune Cookie

March 21, 2017

The quote at the beginning is from the fortune cookie I had at my last visit to Panda Express.  I like Panda Express even though some say it isn’t authentic…like Pizza Hutt is?

I like writing about weird things and drawing a correlation between these weird things and life.  I once wrote about peaches and got hundreds of reads.  Once I wrote about a tree house and that one was a hit too! This is my second post on the ubiquitous fortune cookie and I would expect no less than a few hundred readers to find something useful resulting from a tiny piece of paper baked inside of a cookie.  A choking hazard I’m sure!

Why do we look forward to reading our fortune cookie?  It’s not like we believe them to really have the power to shape or foretell our future, right?  Otherwise, we’d go out and buy them by the case and read them until we found the one that most matched our vision of the perfect life.

You know it’s true because when you’re dining on Chinese food you make sure that your “fortune” cookie doesn’t roll off of the table, get taken away by the waiter, or heaven forbid be taken by your dinner mate!  So what is so compelling about those awful tasting cookies and the cheesy sayings written on those little choking hazards?

Before I answer that, I have a question for you to think about.  When was the last time that someone said something positive, motivational, kind, or uplifting to you?  Aside from MetroFactor.net of course.  Having a difficult time remembering no?  Maybe you can come up with a couple of examples but they’re all numbered on one hand with a few fingers left over, right?

Furthermore my friend.  When was the last time that you said something positive, motivational, kind, or uplifting to someone?  Sorry but the kids don’t count, that’s your duty.

I believe that this tiny choking hazard makes us feel good about ourselves, it makes us believe that we are worth something and that someone took the time to stuff this little choking hazard of a note into this mediocre tasting biscuit because they love us, or at the very least they care about us, oh hell, we just like the way that we feel after reading them.

I believe that receiving begins with giving so tomorrow I want you to go and find three people that you can be a fortune cookie to. Do your best to fill their day with a positive affirmation, a kind word, or compliment and see what it does for you.
