“We are kept from our goal, not by obstacles, but by a clear path to a lesser goal.”
March 29, 2017
The inspiration for today’s post comes from the book The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan.
Why is that we dream so small? Why is it that we set the bar so low for ourselves? Think about this for a moment. Do you cook? What does Mario Batali have that you don’t have? Do you play guitar? What does Tom Petty have that you don’t have? Can you sing? What does Taylor Swift have that you don’t have? I believe that the answer is simply, a bigger desire to succeed in their given field, a bigger dream.
Do you see other people having the success that you wish you had? What do they have that you don’t have? Don’t tell me it’s money, time, yadda, yadda, yadda. It’s not about resources, it’s about resourcefulness. If you want something bad enough you’ll find the way to get it.
I play guitar and I can play the same songs that most any band can play. I know the chords, the changes, the rhythm. But I never had the guts enough to shoot for rock star status. I had a clear path to a lesser goal, to have the ability to play the songs the stars got wealthy from. You know what? I achieved that lesser goal for myself.
Allow me to share my own experience here with you based on what I learned from my guitar goals, and forgive me for using myself as the role model again. This blog, this year’s worth of work, these 136 blog posts are a part of my big dream, evening after evening I work to put words to page all in an effort to reach my bigger goal. Have I reached that goal? No, I have not. But I can still see it among the stars even tonight as I write these words. Is the journey easy? No, but as long as I see the goal I can keep on writing. Do I have all of the skills necessary? Again I say no, but I won’t let that stop me, I’ll pick them up along the way.
Whatever your dreaming of today, whatever it is that you’re striving for, make it big. You’re almost just as likely to hit that as you are to hit the lesser goal. That is of course if you have the guts to shoot for the stars.
