Are You Flatlining?

If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.

-Barack Obama-

Sometimes, as we move through life, it’s easier just to give up.  Like a heart that flatlines on the operating table, it’s easier just to stay where we are neither going up or down.  No growth, no future, no plan.

It seems that there is little support as we try and make our way through our careers, our family life, and our social life.  This is especially true if you’re shooting for something big, like a business, a new career with awesome pay, or something way out there like heading to Hollywood to make it big.

Let’s be honest here, people are either afraid we’ll fail or they’re afraid we’ll succeed.  We find ourselves trying to make it on our own, trying to dig deep for the motivation to keep going, trying to stay positive when everything inside of us is full of despair.

I guess that’s life.  It’s just the way we humans are, somewhat self-centered.  I will agree that if we’re fortunate there is a support system that keeps us going, but not always, and if it is there it can’t be at our beck and call 24/7/365.  There will be days that we have to get ourselves through, to pick our own future out of the toilet and keep moving.

The tough part in life is that we really do have to make it on our own.  Our support system can’t carry the self-imposed burdens that we feel, our thoughts, our emotions, our fears and our failures.  These things all reside within ourselves and it is only we who can feel their weight.  So how do we cope?  How do we overcome?

I want to leave you with this thought, and that is to mind your state.  What’s your body look like when you’re struggling?  Stand up tall and straight, breath deep, believe that you can and you will.  Your physical state affects your mood, and your mood will change your output.  Don’t believe me?  Next time you’re down, stand tall, smile, and raise your fists in the air, do that long enough and you can’t stay down!

This is what I call pulling yourself up by the puppet strings, it’s your job, your responsibility to come back to that place where you can again produce your best work.  No one is going to do this for you, it’s a part of reaching your dreams, it’s work, it’s tough, and it’s worth it.

There are days, like today, that I don’t want to write, I just want to stop altogether for all sorts of reasons.  But once I pick myself up by the puppet strings and begin to do what I love to do, then everything just seems to flow.  I change my state, even though my emotions say otherwise.  After all, it’s my life, my success, my battle to win or to lose.
