What’s Holding You Back?

If you want to conquer fear, don’t sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

-Dale Carnegie-
What are you afraid of? Why are you not sharing your gift with the world?

Listen, I really dislike using myself as an example, but I feel that the time has come to be more open with you.  There are some things I have not mentioned about myself in the past 184 blog posts here on MetroFactor.net, so here it goes.

For the past five years or so have wanted to write a blog but it wasn’t until February 2016 that I finally took the plunge.  I Never took a course, never asked anyone how to start or what to write.  I just did it.  I once heard someone say that it doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be shared.  That really struck a chord with me, and I did what I had to do for this blog to be born.

I had plenty of doubts about my ability and commitment to do it.  I’ve had a few college course but never enough to earn a degree.  That was a big one that I had to overcome, and sometimes I still struggle with it.  How do I tell professional people how to live their lives and manage their careers if I don’t have a degree in anything?

I have been serving people for over forty years, so I guess that counts for something.  It is that experience, along with the many career experiences that I have had, that I feel qualify me to do this.  Someone might read that and think that I am completely wrong and will shut down their mind to what I write.  That’s their prerogative, and I respect that because I understand that even if I had multiple degrees, I would not appeal to every reader.  But I couldn’t let that stop me, I had to dip my toe into the water just to see what would happen.  Here’s what I’ve learned.

We all have an audience, Seth Godin calls them Tribes.  I, via MetroFactor, am blessed enough to have a loyal tribe of readers who, I hope, are receiving value from the words on this blog.  Thank you for being there!

The world is a different place today than it was 10 or 20 years ago.  We can all access the world through our computers to learn, grow, share, give, sell, encourage, and succeed!

What once required an investment of time, connections, money, years of education, or apprenticeships can be had today via, YouTube, WordPress, iTunes, Twitter, eBay, Etsy, and other outlets.  The world has become reachable by the average Joe or Jane, and that reach has become very affordable!

Look, even if your goals are in the non-digital realm, reaching out and sharing your ideas in the digital world will give you exposure, build your confidence, and stretch your mind to new places.  I promise, but you’ll never know unless you do try.

One last confession I want to make.  I promise you that I’m doing this with much trepidation, but I know that I must do it.  Deep breath!  Here goes, I want to write a book!  I already have the title in mind, I know what I want it to be about, but the doubts are still there, the fear of failure looms close by, and the fear of rejection isn’t far behind.

How on earth does one write a book?  I don’t know…yet.  Will anyone read it?  I don’t know that either…yet.  I’ll never know until I try and I will never start unless I commit.  This is my commitment, this is my start, this is my dream, and it is my responsibility to step into it.

I opened today with a question that I’m going to ask again, what are you afraid of? That thing that’s holding you back is nothing more than a feeling, a feeling that you can work past if you will just start doing something.

In conclusion: My fears are boiling over right now.  They’re telling me, “don’t you dare post this because this is a big commitment that you have no idea how to fulfill.”  True, but I’ll never know how unless I do it.

Wish me luck!

Tino
