If you want to conquer fear, don’t sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.
Have you met Meena? She’s the shy young female elephant on the movie Sing. Meena is voiced by singer Tori Kelly. If you haven’t watched Sing, you should. It’s the uplifting story of Theatre owner Buster Moon, who gathers together a rag-tag bunch of animals for a singing contest. As with most animation movies, not much goes right from the very beginning.
For today’s conversation, I’d like to direct your attention to Meena, that’s her at the top of the page. I’m sure that at this point some of you “adults” out there are rolling your eyes because I’m writing about an animated movie, and for the second time it’s the same movie! Like I said, you really need to watch this film…you might even see yourself in it.
Meena has a beautiful gift in her God given ability to sing, and she knows it but is so riddled with shyness and self-doubt that she’s suffering deep inside. She’s allowing her feelings to literally steal her future right out of her hands! Sound familiar?
In the movie, Buster Moon tells Meena,“ Do what you love, and you won’t be afraid anymore because you love doing it.” Like many of us, Meena has to go through the valley before she gets the message and lets her voice take over the show.
When you watch the movie, you can always tell when Meena feels fear and insecurity because she draws her enormous ears over her face, but when she finally realizes that the fear has disappeared because she’s doing what she loves, her ears go along for the ride.
What’s holding you back? Fear? Doubt? Insecurity? Gee, the list is endless right? Remember, what you put out there doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be shared. Don’t think that this stuff only happens in animated movies because it happens in real life too. It’s not just animated elephants that have something worth sharing, but real people just like you. It can be anything too, not just performing.
People start doing what they love to or want to do, and in the process, they become better because they love doing it! That can be you too! At the risk of spoiling the movie for you, I’ve placed Meena’s performance below for you to watch. Pay attention to her ears at the beginning of her performance, that’s us when we approach our sharing with apprehension and fear but none the less we keep going forward and things change.
I’ll wrap up after you watch the short clip below. LinkedIn Users may have to click here to view.
Did you notice how Meena’s whole body opened up after she performed past the fear? It didn’t just go away without her taking some first steps. Did you hear how her singing just flowed and crescendoed to the point that everyone was singing with her? Yep, all that is possible for you too, if you’ll just share that thing you’re afraid of sharing but are just dying to show the world.
