I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.
Is the situation that you find yourself in good or bad? This is the Question that Heather Lanier asks on here recent TED talk. Heather Lanier TED talk.
As I listened I realized that so much of what I deemed “bad” in my life had many times been just the opposite, and some of the “good” faired the same. For instance, just months after the Oklahoma City Bombing in April of 1995, I was told by the owner of the company I was working for that, the company was low on cash and that the sales team would be put on straight commissions.
When the sales staff is struggling to sell a company’s products, and you do not see any light at the end of the tunnel, you begin to weigh your options. That was a low morning for me. By noon that day, I decided that I needed to change career paths and by 5:00 PM that very day, determined and scared I would be unemployed, I found a new job that led me to the career that I have today.
What I saw as a disaster in the morning turned into a triumph by the evening.
Heather Lanier says that we tend to “label” a situation too soon before we have all of the information or have given things time to play out. So much of our life is driven by how we feel, be sure to hold back judgment on what is happening to you so that you can stay positive. If your world has just changed, then you’re going to need all of the positive energy that you can muster to forge ahead.
